The 'BERKSHIRE BANSHEES'
Wheelchair Rugby Club
Reading RFC, Rams RFC, Newbury RFC, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby and all the Berkshire RFU Rugby Clubs, London Irish, with support from Get Berkshire Active and Wokingham Borough Council, launched a Wheelchair Rugby club in the county; The ‘Berkshire Banshees’ Wheelchair Rugby Club.

Wheelchair Rugby is an exciting fusion of ice hockey, handball and rugby. It’s not only about speed and chair contact, but is also a tactically intelligent game to be involved in. Eight rolling substitutes make up squads of 12, with four players on court per team at any time, with the aim of driving the ball across the opponents' goal line. Contact between wheelchairs is permitted, as players use their chairs to block and hold opponents.

41 Years in the making

Get Involved

Wheelchair Rugby was invented in 1977 in Winnipeg, Canada, and was originally known as “Murderball” because of its then aggressive nature. Today, Wheelchair Rugby is a Paralympic sport played in more than 25 countries, and is under development in several others.
The club training sessions are open to both Youth (12+) and Adult players with a physical impairment; you don’t need to be a wheelchair user to take part. We welcome players of any ability, new players who have never tried this sport before, old players who have played previously but are thinking of playing again, as well as anyone who would just be interested in volunteering.
Purpose designed Rugby Chairs
Wheelchair rugby is a contact sport and the equipment, as a result, must be robust yet agile.
The club owns & borrows rugby chairs from GBWR, whilst applying for funding and sponsorship to purchase more rugby chairs.
Banshee Members Fundraising for Wheelchairs
"I've been playing wheelchair rugby for over a year now. We set up the Banshees in Berkshire with support from Wheelchair Rugby GB. Wheelchair rugby needs specialist chairs. We started off with some second-hand loan chairs from GBWR and have recently bought four new chairs of our own with SportAid funding. But we need more chairs for our players, so I'm fundraising for that. Wheelchair rugby chairs are around £5,000 each, and I aim to raise enough in 2019 to buy a new one for the club. Any help wil be hugely appreciated."
                            Thank you, Adrian
