In mid-2016 Get Berkshire Active (GBA) approached me on behalf of Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR)  to ask if Reading RFC would help set up Berkshires first WRC. Having watched the Paralympics and Invictus games, it was a very easy decision for me to get behind this project and see if we could make it happen.
Having considered the best way to approach this and to make sure as many people could get involved we approached all Berks RFU Rugby clubs to ask if they would support creating a Berkshire team. Every club agreed they would help where they could. From this initial contact we created a small working party including representatives of GBA, GBWR, Reading RFC, Redingensians (Rams RFC), Newbury RFC to create a project scope document.
Having taken our time to get things in place we set up our first tasters sessions in August 2017 and delighted to say we managed to attract a number of people to attend, who have since been the driving force behind the club. Having decided upon Berkshire Banshees as the name of our club, thanks to Cath Reynolds for her inspired choice, we held our first club training session on 11th November 2017.

We are delighted to say that have continued with the club and now have 8 regular players attending weekly sessions, supported by the excellent Luke White as our head coach. In September 2018 we relocated to our permanent home at Reading Blue Coat School in Sonning, which is a great venue.

As to the future of the club, we are actively seeking new players and volunteers to help with all aspects of running a community led sports club. We have been awarded a grant from Sport England to help fund 3 wheelchairs, which cost in the region of £3,200 each, and have been gifted money from two friends of the group, so we are in the process of buying 2 more chairs. As a club we need to have up to 10 chairs available, so we are in need of financial support and will be carrying out some fundraising activities over the coming months to ensure we can sustain the club all year round.

For further information how you can get involved please email me at [email protected] and I will be delighted to discuss what help we need
